Just to prove once again that I am living in a truly amazing lifetime.
Over a meal of nasi padang from a polystyrene box, balancing on a wooden chair in the doctors' mess and angling my head to catch the live updates from the American elections, I actually started tearing when I realised that I was listening to the thank you speech of the first mixed-race president-elect in the history of the United States.
I couldn't believe my own reaction, but seeing him on the podium on live telecast, with so many fellow americans cheering - faces full of unadulterated joy - I just couldn't help myself.
Hayley's comet, the Berlin wall, Chinese commu-capitalism, the completion of the Supercollider, and so much more has happened in my lifetime.....and there is so much more living to do. I hope that as I grow older, I will still have the conviction to do what Obama described of his 106-year-old supporter - be an agent of change and not a passive receipient.
I'm sure you all remember Billy Joel's hit song "We Didn't Start The Fire". All those things that he mentioned....and more.....but yes, let's start a fire. A good one this time. A warm safe hearth for all of us.
